Chinoiserie: eternally chic or officially dated?
We think chinoiserie is definitely still chic, as long as it feels collected, colorful, and personal...not like a room frozen in time.
Chinoiserie has all the things we love in a pattern: birds, winding botanicals, dreamy gardens, flowers, pagodas, porcelain, and lots of tiny details to notice. Because it’s naturally decorative, it instantly adds character to any room. To keep chinoiserie feeling modern, don’t take away its personality, let it have some fun.
But first, what exactly is chinoiserie?
The word chinoiserie comes from the French word chinois, meaning Chinese. The decorative style developed in Europe during the 17th century as trade brought Chinese porcelain, lacquer, silk, and other decorative objects into European homes. Chinese hand-painted wallpapers began appearing for sale in London by the late 1600s, and the style became especially fashionable during the 18th century, when it mixed easily with the elaborate, asymmetrical spirit of Rococo design.
It’s important to remember that chinoiserie is a European take on East Asian art, not an accurate picture of Chinese life or culture. Many old designs mix real artistic influences with imagined scenes and European ideas about “the East.” Knowing this history helps us use and reinterpret the style thoughtfully today.
What has stuck around is the look: graceful branches, lush gardens, birds, flowers, dreamy scenes, and a love for beautiful things. These details keep showing up in wallpaper, fabrics, ceramics, furniture, and interiors, even after centuries.
So how can you make chinoiserie feel fresh and modern?
1. Let it out of the blue-and-white box
Classic blue and white will always be a favorite, but chinoiserie doesn’t have to stay in that lane. Trying out new color combinations is one of the fastest ways to give a traditional pattern a fresh feel.
Try pairing coral with powder blue, lavender with moss, pink with tomato red, or leafy green with warm yellow. A new color mix can change the mood while keeping the charm and detail that make chinoiserie stand out.
Our Mahjong Garden Toile Wallpaper is a perfect example. It borrows the layered scenery and storytelling of a traditional toile, then adds a playful world of Mahjong tables, bamboo groves, orange trees, peacocks, flowers, and hidden game references. In a soft, sun-washed palette, it can feel airy and relaxed. In a brighter color story, the same detailed pattern becomes energetic enough for a game room, bar, or powder room.
Color is also what makes Tennis Champs & Chintz Wallpaper feel more garden party than formal parlor. Its classic trellis and floral framework gets a wink from monkeys playing doubles, proving that a historically inspired pattern can still have a very good sense of humor.
2. Skip the matching set
If your wallpaper, curtains, upholstery, pillows, lampshades, and bedding all match perfectly, the room can start to feel more like a museum than a home. Modern chinoiserie works best when it’s mixed with other interesting pieces.
Try pairing a scenic toile with stripes, or mix a loose floral with a neat check. Add in rattan, lacquer, bold geometric patterns, or solid linen. The aim is to coordinate, not matchy-matchy.
Our Mahjong collection was designed with this kind of pattern play in mind. Use Mahjong Garden Toile Wallpaper on the walls, add Mahjong Floral Stripe to the ceiling, and slip Mahjong Tiles Wallpaper behind a bar or bookshelf. The prints share colors and hand-painted details, but each has a different scale and rhythm. Together, they build a room that feels layered instead of matchy-matchy.
3. Add one thing that breaks the rules
Every traditional room needs something unexpected to keep things interesting.
This could be a glossy cobalt console under a romantic garden wallpaper, a modern sculptural light in a toile-covered dining room, or a bold striped rug under a chintz sofa. Lucite, polished chrome, modern art, painted trim, and unique lighting can all keep classic patterns from feeling too formal.
Our Champagne Shenanigans Toile Wallpaper follows the same rule within the pattern itself. At first glance, it reads like an elegant chinoiserie toile. Look closer, and the monkeys are having a party. That tiny surprise gives the design a sense of humor and makes it feel at home in a lively, modern space.
The idea isn’t to add something random. Pick one piece with a clean shape, brighter finish, bold color, or playful story to create contrast with the traditional pattern.
The best rooms for chinoiserie wallpaper
Chinoiserie has stuck around because it can feel calm or lively, depending on the room and colors you choose.
Powder rooms
A powder room is the perfect spot to be bold. You don’t have to play it safe in a small space, and detailed chinoiserie wallpaper gives guests something fun to notice. Pair it with a lacquered vanity, an antique mirror, and a modern sconce for a fresh look.
Dining rooms
Chinoiserie and dining rooms are a perfect match. Scenic wallpaper sets the mood without using up floor space, and birds, flowers, and garden designs make the room feel special even before the table is set. Add simple dining chairs or a modern chandelier to keep the wallpaper from feeling too formal. The room should feel social, layered, and a little theatrical. Start with Mahjong Garden Toile or Mahjong Floral Stripe, then bring in a coordinating tile print, colorful game table, upholstered chairs, and good task lighting. It is also a great place to mix patterns across the walls, ceiling, bar, and built-ins.
Bedrooms and nurseries
Soft botanical chinoiserie patterns can make a bedroom feel calm and cozy without being boring. Choose light colors and designs with lots of open space. Add a small gingham, subtle stripe, or solid linen to keep the room sweet but not too themed.
Entryways
Your entryway should show off your home’s personality. A bird-and-botanical wallpaper or scenic toile does this right away. Keep the furniture simple, and add a standout mirror, a woven console, and a great lamp.
Bars, bookshelves, and ceilings
Chinoiserie doesn’t have to go on every wall. Try it on the back of built-ins, behind a wet bar, inside a cabinet, or on the ceiling. These smaller spots are perfect for bold colors and make a room feel unique without being too much.
What to mix with modern chinoiserie
The best chinoiserie rooms mix something fancy with something simple. Here are a few combinations we love:
- Chinoiserie toile with a crisp cabana stripe
- Chintz upholstery with a painted leaf or trellis wallpaper
- Bird-and-botanical wallpaper with rattan, wicker, or bamboo furniture
- Blue-and-white porcelain with coral, citron, lavender, or tomato red accents
- Romantic florals with contemporary art
- Traditional wallpaper with glossy lacquer or clean-lined lighting
- Scenic patterns with natural grasscloth or basketweave texture
- Antique furniture with an unexpected patterned rug
When you mix patterns, change up the sizes. Let one print be big and loose, another neat and straight, and a third small and bold. Using two or three colors throughout the room helps everything feel pulled together, even if the patterns are different.
The final verdict
Chinoiserie is still stylish because it was never meant to be dull. It’s creative, detailed, colorful, and perfect for rooms that tell a story.
Try new colors. Mix patterns instead of matching everything. Add something that stands out. Whether you use chinoiserie all over a dining room, behind a bar, on a game-room ceiling, or just on one floral chair, it feels most modern when it reflects your style.
At House Party, we believe the classics always have a place. We just like them best when they’re ready to have some fun.
