The Fifth Wall You’re Forgetting: How Wallpapered Ceilings Instantly Transform a Room
Your ceiling deserves just as much love as your walls. From cozy powder rooms to show-stopping dining rooms, wallpapered ceilings add instant personality, depth, and drama to any space.
Hey friends, Alexis here, and I’m more pumped than I’d like to admit to talk about ceilings! Yes, ceilings, it’s a more exciting topic than you could imagine. Have you ever walked into a room and thought, "Wow, this feels so finished, so freaking cool and....complete?" There’s a good chance the ceiling had something to do with it. Most of us focus on the walls (duh), the furniture, and the flooring, but what about the ceiling? That’s prime real estate for adding some serious wow factor, and wallpaper is the secret weapon you didn’t know you needed.
At House Party, we’re all about helping you create those jaw-dropping, feel-good spaces that make you and your guests instantly feel at home. Wallpapering your ceiling might sound like a bold move, and that’s because it is. But trust me, it’s the kind of bold that pays off when done right. Here's why this is one project that is totally worth it.
3 Reasons to Consider Wallpapering Your Ceiling
1. It Makes the Room Feel Complete
Have you ever finished designing a space and felt like… something was missing? That’s probably because the ceiling was left naked. When you add wallpaper to your ceiling, it’s like the candle on top of the already decorated birthday cake. Suddenly, the whole room feels fun, like a party. It creates a sense of cohesion and makes the space feel thoughtfully designed, down to the very last detail.
Imagine walking into a powder room with funky conversational printed wallpaper on the ceiling. That will really give you something to talk about when you exit. Or picture a dining room with a statement botanical print overhead. Your guests will feel like they’ve stepped into a secret garden (without the bug bites). That’s the power of a well-dressed ceiling.
2. It Creates an Unforgettable “Wow” Moment
We’ve all been there, walking into someone’s home and instantly feeling like this person has their life together. I was once invited over to a much more senior than myself person’s house in my retail industry at the time, and she had the most dramatic dining room. Massive round table, deep, bold crimson red grasscloth walls, and the most amazing floral wallpaper on the ceiling. That room has always stuck out to me, and I immediately thought, Wow, this woman knows what she likes. How do I get an invite to the next dinner party?
Picture a maximalist-style sitting room with a soft floral print on the ceiling, layered patterns, cozy textures, and that extra touch of personality overhead. Or a beach house with a tropical palm print on the ceiling of the sunroom. Talk about instant vacation vibes. The ceiling becomes a statement piece without taking up any extra square footage. My personal favorite project was installing monkeys on a powder room ceiling; my daughter would count them while she... you get the idea.
3. It Adds Depth, Dimension, and Drama
Ceilings are often the forgotten fifth wall, but adding wallpaper instantly adds more visual interest and depth to the room. This is especially true if you’re working with a smaller space. Wallpaper on the ceiling draws the eye upward, making the room feel larger and more dynamic, just like my monkey powder room. 3 yards of extra wallpaper made all the difference in that tiny space!
For example, if you’re working with a narrow hallway, try installing a soft textured paperweave on the ceiling to add warmth and dimension. In a bedroom, a dreamy botanical print on the ceiling, paired with crisp, solid walls, creates a cozy, tucked-in feeling. And in a nursery? A playful retro-inspired print overhead creates a whimsy, happy vibe without overwhelming the space.
